This is the result of my year-long portrait project for 2025. Inspired by the remarkable power of Robert Howlett’s 1857 portrait of Isambard Kingdom Brunel standing with the launching chains of the Great Eastern, I wanted to attempt to bring this quality of visual metaphor to my portraiture, a new direction for me.
I contacted potential subjects (most of whom I didn’t know) whose work—largely or all representational or traditional—accorded with my own views on art. From each I solicited views about his or her artistic outlook and work, and then tried to arrive at an image that might reflect some aspect of that outlook. I did not expect to achieve all I wanted; it was an initial experiment and learning experience. I am grateful to all of these exceptional individuals for their collaboration in this effort.
I will post one or two at a time on the page linked below. As in the physical exhibit, I am including the website of all who provided one, so that you can view their work. In some cases, I believe, this may allow you to make a connection to the portrait, while introducing you to their fine work.
The images here are digital photographs of the prints. Complexities and vagaries of posting small digital copies to the web leaves images that can only suggest my intention as it is conveyed by seeing the physical prints in person in good light. for those of you not local, my apologies. With that said, the link below will take you to the page to view the portraits.
